Well folks! Who could have imagined that restarting the Gallery at 227 W. Oak Street would come up against a worldwide epidemic? Setting all that aside, we had a fantastic opening night on Leap Day Night, with a lot of new faces coming into the gallery all day long.

If you fast forward to First Friday, the results for that event were more mixed. We had a full studio once again, but there was little to no buying going on. That was a hard lesson for me, as I am the person who created First Friday Denton, and I never thought of it as what it I saw on the First Friday of March 2020. I am learning some interesting lessons being back on the retail scene in Denton, and some of them are … difficult.

As we are moving through the first month of new occupancy, we continue to overlay the “Co-op” business model onto A Creative Art Studio and Gallery. We started with the simplicity of dropping the “A,” and quickly transitioned to a potential name change that will rebrand the Studio as a GALLERY first, and a LEARNING STUDIO secondly.

The Gallery is virtually completely filled with Co-op artists now, and we only have one space that could be subdivided. Displays are fresh, and I built new hanging systems to avoid drilling any more holes in the 100-plus year-old bricks. IF nothing else, come by and see the hanging system I built! It works well, but not perfectly — turns out those old walls waver a bit.

The real excitement comes with the Learning Studio (classroom), which occupies the middle third of the building (227 W. Oak Street). It is still a work in progress as of this writing, but many members are champing at the bit to schedule classes for the next couple of virus-free months.

Hours are abbreviated as the virus has dictated, and as our growing pains require adjustments along the way.

If you are interested in teaching in the Studio Classroom, be sure to let us know, and we can give you the ins-and-outs of how the system works, and the calendar dates that are available.

We are also looking at the Oak Street location as a venue for parties. So if you are looking for a place with great backgrounds, a ton of floor space and a great location – stop in and ask!
